Tree up, lights on and music blaring - so much for which we give thanks

This week took an unexpected turn when my 9‑year‑old ended up with a hockey stick to the eye. It was a complete accident, and I equally feel for the gorgeous best mate on the other end of the stick. Poor lads! Cue a Wednesday night dash to A&E as a precaution, and the relief of having people around us who came to our aid straight away.
Last night brought more drama: I didn’t have enough hands to comfort both of my boys when the little one crashed his mini trolley into the ankle of the big one, only for the trolley to rebound into his little nose. Thank you, Morrisons, for the care, chairs, and frozen peas.
Since Tuesday, the week has been a blur. After the A&E visit, we had two mornings of sickness: whether concussion‑related, a bug, or simply too much sugar, we’re still not sure. Add in the freezing weather (hello frozen fingers and mini‑screen work) and a couple of tricky work conversations, and it’s fair to say we were limping toward the weekend.
But even in the chaos, there’s gratitude:
For the care and kindness of those who stepped in when we needed them.
For resilience: kids bounce back, and so do parents.
For the reminder that not everything has to be done at once.
For the season itself, nudging us to pause and give thanks.
It’s been an epic year - full of change, growth, and momentum… and new little paws… Even weeks like this, messy and unpredictable, are part of the story. Sometimes the pause is forced, but it’s still a chance to reflect, reset, and remember how much there is to be thankful for.
This is hopefully the first Advent since lockdown when we’ll get to experience some of the magic and wonder of the season. And before then, we are one of those families: the tree is up, the lights are twinkling, and the Christmas music blares for every car trip. We’re all about soaking up as much of the season as possible.
Jumpers, gloves, and hats at the ready… even walking Charlie in this grim and filthy weather isn’t as bad as it could be. Let’s embrace it all!
We’re not yet at the Christmas countdown, so this is the last of the calm before the storm, and I am very thankful for it. Happy Saturday, everyone!
